Whether you are a member of the City of London’s suited brigade or not, the square mile has a tonne on offer when it comes to food, drink and entertainment. These include fanciful bars, American smokers, draft houses, medieval banquet halls and cabaret venues to name but a few, all of which (somehow) seamlessly integrate with the ‘shiny shiny’ office spaces that dominate this part of London. So no surprise then that, lurking beneath the grounds of the Gherkin (that play host to the weekly KERB @ the Gherkin street food market), exists Swingers, an 18,000 sq ft, 18 hole crazy golf course venue complete with four bars, three street food stalls, a 1920s themed club house and gin terrace that overlooks the course – no surprises at all.
Split into two 9 hole courses (the Lighthouse and the Windmill) Swingers offers a crazy golf experience to be marvelled, with captivating holes, a live disco DJ, disco lighting and attentive staff that ensure players focus on keeping their scores down while keeping beverages topped up.
As you’d hope, the Windmill course features a large moving windmill and the Lighthouse course has a beautiful illuminated lighthouse. Players will need skill and a bit of luck to take them round the combination of dog legs, jumps, sand traps and loop-the-loops. The courses have the feel of a secret English country garden, filled with trees, ivies, creepers and wild flowers that cover the reclaimed timbers and pergolas that surround the different holes. Swingers have taken everything that visitors loved about the Shoreditch pop-up course and expanded on them for the permanent site, while creating surroundings that are almost like an immersive theatrical set.
On the back of the success of their pop-up venue, which fully sold out over its 5 month run, creators Matt Grech-Smith and Jeremy Simmonds continue to give the people what they want, recruiting Soho favourites Pizza Pilgrims, street vendor heavyweights turned restaurateurs Patty & Bun and taco specialist DF/Mexico. As if this wasn’t enough, Swingers have partnered with London coffee maestros Nude Coffee Roasters, who serve their full range of artisan coffees – to drink in or take away – from midday until 6pm, at which time their excellent espresso finds its way into the Swingers signature espresso martinis.
Swingers has been named by British GQ as “One of the 60 best things in the World right now”, and we couldn’t agree more! Get your putters ready for Swingers II opening in early 2018.
